Yes. Cap is the everyday word for what dentists call a crown. Both refer to a restoration that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance while protecting whatever healthy tooth structure remains underneath.

A filling replaces a portion of a tooth and relies on the surrounding structure to support it. Once too much of that structure has been lost to decay, a fracture, repeated restorations, or root canal therapy, a filling no longer has enough to hold onto and is at risk of failing or splitting the tooth. A crown solves this by covering and binding the tooth together rather than filling a space within it.

We will look at how much sound tooth remains, where the tooth sits in your bite, and how much force it has to withstand before recommending one over the other.

Crowns can be made from porcelain fused to a metal substrate, from all-porcelain, or from one of the newer high-strength ceramics. Each has its own balance of strength and appearance. Back teeth take the heaviest chewing forces and may call for a material chosen primarily for durability, while a front tooth is usually restored with a material selected for how convincingly it mimics natural enamel. We will discuss which material suits the tooth being treated.

Treatment is typically completed over two visits. At the first, the tooth is prepared, an impression or digital scan is taken, and a temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while your permanent restoration is made. At the second, the temporary is removed, and the final crown is checked for fit, bite, and appearance before being cemented into place.

Modern dental ceramics interact with light much the way natural enamel does, which is what allows a well-made crown to blend in rather than stand out. The shade is matched to the teeth around it, and the shape and contours are designed to suit your smile. For a front tooth, we take particular care over these details, and you will have the opportunity to review the appearance before the crown is permanently cemented.

The tooth is thoroughly numbed with local anesthetic, so the preparation appointment itself is comfortable. Some sensitivity to temperature or pressure in the days afterward is normal and settles as the tooth recovers. If your bite feels high or the sensitivity persists, let us know, as an adjustment is usually quick and straightforward.

A well-made crown can last many years, but its lifespan depends far more on what happens around it than on the crown itself. The margin where the crown meets the tooth is still vulnerable to decay, so brushing and flossing that area properly matters a great deal. Grinding or clenching, chewing ice, and using teeth to open packaging all shorten the life of a restoration considerably.

Care for it as you would any natural tooth. Brush twice daily, floss around it every day, taking the floss out sideways rather than snapping it up past the margin, and keep up with routine checkups so we can monitor the restoration. If you clench or grind your teeth, a night guard is a worthwhile investment in protecting the work.
